I went to SoonerCon this weekend and it turns out they did have a women in comics panel. It was a bit strange, though. 2 men (independent comics artists) and 1 woman who was a cover artist for a small-press company.
I swear I fully intended to sit in the back and listen, but a lot of the issues I'm used to dealing with weren't well-known by the panelists so I ended up talking back and forth with them a lot from the audience. We talked about comic book history, favorite artists, the difference between mainstream and independents (since these were indie pros, they didn't feel much could be done to fix DC and Marvel or realize the importance of it), feminist history, current affairs. It was great about halfway through the panel when the moderator's wife finally made it during the discussion on how scifi films in the 50s could easily be interpreted as part of a backlash to working women because she knew about this stuff too.
A man brought up that a lot of the problems were mirrored by minorities in comics, but not much else was discussed on that, unfortunately.
After the panel I went to see the panelists and apologize for becoming a "fourth panelist" but they said they really enjoyed the conversation and I got a few extra hours discussing biological determinism with one of the artist, who was working on his own indie company.
A friend of mine, who missed the panel, said that next year he wants to try a minorities in comics panel (or a women and minorites) and see how it comes out.
Has anyone else been to local scifi/comics conventions?
